ACUPUNCTURE

Increasing Fertility with Acupuncture

Robert Moffett, Acupuncturist

Several medical studies have confirmed what the Chinese have known for more than 2,000 years–acupuncture and Chinese medicine improve fertility rates and support a woman’s whole body.

In 2002, a study published in the respected medical journal Fertility & Sterility, found that when used in conjuction with other assisted reproductive techniques, acupuncture dramatically improved women’s chances of becoming pregnant.  Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York concluded that:

  • Acupuncture helps to regulate the menstrual cycle
  • Acupuncture positively affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, which plays a key role in fertility
  • Acupuncture normalizes the hormone and endocrine systems which regulate ovulation (This benefit was especially apparent in women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).
  • Acupuncture increases blood flow to the uterus, bettering the chances of an ovum implanting on the uterine wall
  • Acupuncture reduces anxiety and stress levels which can adversely impact fertility

In Chinese medicine, it is believed that infertility is caused by an imbalance of Qi (Life Energy) and blood affecting one or more of the organ systems such as the kidney, spleen or liver. Acupuncture raises fertility potential in women by improving the quality, quantity, balance and flow of Qi. It also helps blood to circulate freely through the body’s cells, organs and tissues. When organs are properly nourished and functioning well, a woman’s health and fertility are increased.

Many women turn to acupuncture because it provides a safe, effective, drug-free, natural approach to treating infertility and enjoying a healthy pregnancy. Furthermore, by strengthening, supporting and balancing a woman’s overall well-being, acupuncture supports Western fertility procedures (such as IVF) and pre-natal treatments, often increasing their effectiveness.
